Medieval city of Saint-Emilion

Gironde
Saint-Émilion

Details of the activity

40 km east of Bordeaux, Saint-Émilion is an architectural gem set in a setting of vineyards, with world-famous wines. The town was born around the cave where lived Saint-Émilion, a Breton hermit who retired in the 8th century to a hermitage carved into the limestone cliff. The city includes many listed monuments including the collegiate church, the cloister of the Doyenné, the cloister of the Cordeliers, the monolithic church carved into the rock, the Tour du Roy. It is traversed via steep alleys called here mounds and escalettes. The Jurisdiction of Saint-Emilion has been listed since 1999 on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a "cultural landscape".
